Australia has built a strong position in the global lithium industry through its abundant hard-rock resources and large-scale spodumene production. But the next phase of the industry is increasingly focused on what happens after the mine.

Rather than exporting lithium primarily as spodumene concentrate, Australian producers are looking further downstream—toward lithium hydroxide, lithium chemicals and, ultimately, more integrated battery-material supply chains.

The reason is straightforward: more value can be created by processing lithium closer to its source.

Australia’s lithium mine output is forecast to continue growing, while refined lithium hydroxide production is also expected to expand significantly. Government forecasts show refined lithium hydroxide exports increasing from 13 kt LCE in 2024–25 to 72 kt in 2026–27.

Supply-Chain Resilience Is Becoming Strategic

The global battery industry has highlighted the risks of concentrating processing capacity in a limited number of markets.

For Australian producers, downstream processing offers an opportunity to participate more directly in diversified battery-material supply chains.

Producing battery-grade lithium chemicals domestically can help establish stronger links between Australian resources, international cathode producers and battery manufacturers.

This is particularly important as governments and manufacturers seek more resilient and diversified critical-mineral supply chains.

Engineering Becomes the Differentiator

As Australian lithium producers move further downstream, the engineering challenge becomes more complex.

A mine and concentrator must operate as part of a broader processing value chain. Material characteristics, process conditions, equipment performance, utilities, automation and product quality all need to remain aligned.

This creates opportunities to improve performance through:

  • Process optimization to improve recovery and throughput
  • Automation and controls to stabilize complex processing operations
  • Industrial connectivity to connect equipment and process data
  • Asset reliability to reduce unplanned downtime
  • Advanced analytics to identify process deviations
  • Digital twins to test operating scenarios
  • AI to support production and maintenance decisions

The objective is not simply to automate individual processes.

It is to create a connected processing operation that can consistently deliver battery-grade product.

Building a Smarter Downstream Value Chain

CSIRO has identified improvements in cost, sustainability, purification efficiency, product quality and waste minimization as important opportunities for Australia’s critical-minerals processing industry.

This points to a broader shift.

Future competitiveness will depend on how effectively producers connect mining, concentration, refining, quality management, utilities and digital operations.

For Australian lithium companies, downstream investment can therefore become more than a strategy for value addition. It can become a platform for building greater operational control and technological capability across the lithium value chain.

Where Utthunga Can Help?

Utthunga can support lithium producers and technology providers as they move from upstream operations toward integrated downstream processing.

Its capabilities span:

  • Process & Plant Engineering — translating processing requirements into execution-ready engineering.
  • Automation & Controls — integrating control systems and improving process stability.
  • Industrial Connectivity — connecting equipment, systems and operational data.
